Teaching Critical Reading Across the Disciplines

Students come to college knowing how to read, of course, but they often struggle to read in the ways that their professors expect. My workshop guides faculty through the many approaches to reading that students use for different genres and reading tasks, then explores specific assignments and classroom activities that are designed to draw students more deeply into reading material. Together we create a table of different kinds of common reading assignments in college (policy statements, opinion pieces, scholarly articles, lab reports, websites, and more) and then figure out which assignments and activities will be most useful for guiding students as they tackle new genres and conventions for different fields of study.
